How Can I Tell If a Diamond Is Real

How Can I Tell If a Diamond Is Real

With the rise of online shopping and lab created alternatives, one of the most frequently asked questions is:

"How do I know if my diamond is real?"

Whether you are buying an engagement ring, inheriting a family heirloom or buying online, being able to tell if a diamond is genuine is essential. As manufacturing jewellers, we use both simple and advanced tools every day to verify a diamond's authenticity.

Quick DIY Tests to Check If a Diamond Is Real

Before visiting a jeweller, try these at home tests.  They are not foolproof but they can give you clues.

        1. Fog Test

  • Breath on the stone like you would a mirror.
  • A real diamond disperses heat instantly, it won't fog up.
  • A fake will stay fogged for a few seconds.

        2. Water Drop Test

  • Drop the loose stone in a glass of water.
  • A real diamond sinks due to its high density.
  • Most fakes float or sink slowly.

        3. Transparency Test (Newspaper orDot Test)

  • Place the diamond face down over printed text.
  • If you can clearly read the letters or dot, it is likely not a real diamond(unless poorly cut).

Important: These tests help identify obvious fakes but are not substitutes for professional testing.

Professional Tests We Use in Our Workshop

As manufacturing jewellers, we have access to advanced diamond testing equipment and industry experience.

        1. Thermal Conductivity Testers

  • Diamonds disperse heat rapidly. Testers like the Presidium Diamond Tester can distinguish diamonds from moissanites, CZ and glass.

         2. UV Light Test

  • Many natural diamonds fluoresce blue under UV light.
  • If it glows green or orange, it may be a stimulant.

         3. Loupe or Microscope Inspection

  • We check for inclusions, facet sharpness and girdle marks(like GIA engraving).
  • Real diamonds often have small imperfections.

         4. Electrical Conductivity (For Moissanite Differentiation)

  • Moissanites can sometimes fool thermal testers. Electrical testing confirms it.

         5. Certificate Matching

  • We use GIA Report Check to system match your diamond's laser inscribed code to its grading report.

The Importance of Certification

Always insist on a GIA, IGI or HRD certificate when buying a diamond. It not only guarantees authenticity but also verifies the diamond's 4C's grading.

From Our Workshop: How We Verify Diamonds

At The Diamond Club, every diamond goes through:

  • Verification using thermal and electrical testers
  • Microscopic inspection by our in house jewellers
  • Certificate verification for matching laser inscription
  • Grading confirmation with our Gemologist partners

"We've seen many stones that look to real to the untrained eye but are actually moissanite or high grade cubic zirconia.  That is why we use both science and craftsmanship to confirm every gem.

Final Advice: What to Do If You're Unsure

  • Bring your stone or ring to us for a free initial inspection.
  • If purchasing online, only buy certified diamonds from reputable jewellers.
  • Ensure the diamond comes with a grading report and laser inscription.
  • Consider remounting or upgrading stones after verification

If you are unsure about a diamond, bring it to The Diamond Club in Joondalup.  We will inspect it for you, explain the results and give honest guidance - with no pressure to buy.
